Travertine Sealing

Travertine Sealing Can Save You Time, Money, and Hassle in the Long Run

If you have ever wondered if travertine sealing is really necessary, we are here to say definitively: Yes! Travertine is a beautiful, unique natural stone – but it is also soft and porous. It needs the protection that comes with a sealant. Sealing it is not going to prevent 100% of etching or staining, but it can significantly reduce the ability of these things to damage the travertine.

We Use the Best Travertine Sealant for Each Job

Travertine Sealing is recommended at least once per year. You may want to reseal twice per year if you have a light-colored stone or if your stone gets a lot of use. You definitely want to look for a penetrating or impregnating travertine sealant as opposed to a topical sealant. Topical sealants just sit on top of the stone, preventing the stone from breathing and potentially creating an unsightly cloudy or hazy film on the stone. Penetrating sealers enter the pores of the stone for better protection without changing the appearance of the stone.

At Fuller Stone Care, we have a favorite travertine sealer that we recommend to all our clients. This sealer is highly resistant to peeling and flaking, and because it can bond with itself there is no need for stripping when you need to reseal the stone.

Natural Travertine and Filled Travertine Are Handled Differently

No matter which type it is, travertine is a type of limestone that is naturally deposited at mineral springs in various parts of the world. The natural process that creates the stone leaves behind many tiny holes. If you have natural travertine, then these holes have been left as is. If you have filled travertine, then the holes were filled in at the factory. You will also need to have the holes refilled occasionally.
